How to protect yourself from influenza this flu season (Australia)
Get your tissues and immune boosters ready – that time of year has come again.
But hopefully, you won’t need them if you boost your immunity.
We’re now in flu season, which we don’t shake off until October. Influenza, commonly known as the flu, is more than coughs and sniffles. It often poses serious health risks for vulnerable populations.
The flu can lead to severe respiratory issues, hospitalisation, and even fatalities – particularly among the elderly, young children, pregnant women and individuals with underlying health conditions.
Even when the flu doesn’t lead to severe complications, it can make you feel terrible and cause you to miss weeks of work or school.
Different flu strains circulate annually, and some are more dangerous than others. Last year in NSW, for example, children accounted for nearly half of all hospital admissions for flu-like sickness.
We don’t know how bad this flu season will be, but let's focus on boosting our immune systems anyway — especially since COVID-19 is spreading as well.
How to protect yourself from influenza and similar nasties this flu season (Australia)
Stress Management:
We can bolster our immune systems by effectively managing stress.
Chronic stress can weaken our body's defences, making us more susceptible to infections like the flu. When the body produces too much cortisol over a long period, inflammation increases, weakening the immune system.
Several studies suggest a link between stress and higher vulnerability to cold viruses.
Incorporating stress-reducing techniques (such as mindfulness meditation) can help alleviate stress and promote overall well-being. It’s also a good idea to engage in hobbies that you love!
Adequate sleep is vital, too. Try to get between seven and nine hours of quality sleep each night. Wind down around the same time if you can, and set up a calming routine before your head hits the pillow.
Healthy Eating:
A balanced diet of essential nutrients is crucial for maintaining a robust immune system. Incorporate plenty of fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains into your meals to give your body the vitamins and minerals needed to fend off infections. Foods high in vitamin C, such as citrus fruit, strawberries, and bell peppers, can offer additional immune support.
Exercise:
Regular physical activity strengthens the immune system. Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise, such as brisk walking, cycling, or swimming (most days of the week). Exercise stimulates the production of antibodies and white blood cells, essential for fighting off pathogens like the influenza virus.
Good hygiene:
Remember that cold and flu viruses spread through infected droplets in the air or on surfaces. Avoid being around people who show symptoms, but if that’s unavoidable, why not wear a medical mask in their presence? Keep your distance as much as possible. It’s also a good idea to wear a mask in crowded places that lack ventilation, such as on trains. Wash your hands well, and avoid touching your face!
Just as importantly, if you feel unwell, please do other people a favour and wear a mask or distance yourself.
Vaccination:
One of the most effective ways to guard against influenza is through vaccination, which provides immunity against prevalent strains of the virus.
Annual flu shots are recommended for people six months and older, with some exceptions (speak to your doctor).
Please note the influenza vaccine is free for:
- All children between six months and five years old
- Pregnant women
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people over six months
- People aged 65 years and over
- People with a medical condition that makes them vulnerable to complications
While the flu vaccine may not offer absolute protection, it significantly reduces the risk of severe illness and complications. Consult your healthcare provider to determine the most suitable vaccination schedule for you and your family.

Supplements for Immunity:
In addition to a nutritious diet, certain supplements can bolster immune function.

Here are some quality supplements we often recommend to customers on a case-to-case basis:
